Man. I'm having one of those days.
When I took my current job I knew that, aside from the normal system administrations tasks, I'd probably also have to be a DBA and a web developer, among other things. I never thought that those roles would take over, though. In the light of Oracle 9iAS things are going to get worse... much worse. I will wear all three hats, and, despite all efforts, probably badly. I find this depressing. Hey, it's just what pays the bills though. Maybe I SHOULD go back to school :P

Hans Reiser, the dude behind ReiserFS, has some interesting ideas about things. He contends that everything you do or could be doing with a computer comes down to problems of namespace. ReiserFS, as it stands now, is an attempt to begin unifying some of those namespaces. Particularly, as far as I can tell, the database and filesystem namespaces. This makes a lot of sense to me.
I was thinking about LDAP. All LDAP is is a database query lanaguage, really. We already have bunches of those.

I've been reading a TON of webcomics lately. Thought I'd throw up some micro-reviews of the latest ones. They begin at the most recent and move backwards through time. Sounds dramatic, don't it?
Errant Story -- This is Poe's (of Exploitation Now! fame) new comic. It's a manga-style (Poe-style) fantasy comic. It looks promising. The dude can draw. I think it will be worth keeping an eye on if you are into the more comic bookish strips. Oddly, it reminds me of Nausicaa.
Everything Jake -- This is a honest-to-god superhero comic. It's sneaky, though. You won't realize it until you're a fair way in. Mike Rosenzweig obviously has some talent. The art is solid and visibly improves over the course of the strip. The writing, while rough, is spot-on for what he's trying to do. I love the characters. It's a superhero comic, man! I'm excited. I'll probably donate to him next month.
Clan of the Cats -- A well-established and reasonably well-liked web comic. When it comes right down to it it's about people, spirituality, and self. The art took me some time to get used to. In fact, I didn't like it at first. In the end, though, I found myself really enjoying it. It's consistent and, like Everything Jake, you can really see it improve. I have no feeling about the writing one way or another. In sort of a backhanded way, that's a compliment.
Lowest Common Denominator -- I linked this the other day... and it's what lead me to all of these other strips. It's written by a guy from Oklahoma. It's coming along nicely. It has a sunday comics feel to it.

Anyway...
I hear he's kind of a weird dude... but then what geek that hardcore isn't? It would have been really interesting to hear him speak.
Phil, where is your webpage these days? The nessahead link doesn't work anymore. I need to update my links.
