Jared's brain. 10.10.00

I just finished rereading Frank Herbert and Bill Ransom's "The Jesus Incident". If you haven't read this and you have a bit of spare time I recommend it. I know it's science-fiction and it's Frank Herbet... bah! Go read it. When you finish e-mail me because I need someone to talk about it with. I don't get it.

I have never read any of Bill Ransom's solo stuff but I can see Herbert's hand all over this book. It's filled with his usual thinly-veiled philosophical and political maunderings. In all fairness, though, I usually find this to be one of the most interesting aspects of Herbert's writing. The man thinks interesting thoughts.

I should explain upfront that I that I don't really put a lot of effort in to figuring out what I think an author is trying to say with a book. Either it stands on it's own in my mind or it doesn't. tJI definitely stands on it's own but I can't understand the stance. It's like scrabbling at thick ice. I can't claw my way through to any kind of meaning.

I think perhaps it has something to do with my already nebulous relationship to whatever spirituality I possess. I don't know.

This book touches on something really important to me, though: the idea that we need only self-worship (of all possible objects of worship). This is not to be confused with some kind of low-grade egotism or the idea of body as temple (although the latter is vaguely related). To me it is more the idea that I should have a sense of myself and the wonder of that self AND I should strive to live up to the potential of that self.

I guess I sound pretty cheesy at this point.

Think about it and let me know what you think.

Love, as always, Jared.

In other news:

I am a poor plumber and I feel bad about it for some reason. My sense of self-worth should NOT depend upon my ability to attach valves to copper pipe. Grrrrrr.

In honor of the torture I have put myself through over my plumbing I am hereby declaring tommorrow to be National Plumber Appreciation Day. Thank you, plumbers. You rock!

I missed work today, thanks to my plumbing. There is much to be said for that.

PS. Before any of you mechanics nazis get your undies in a knot please bear in mind that beyond a level of basic competence it's not necessarily the presentation but the content that counts. Thank you for your understanding.

Some stuff

I have some more interesting tidbits from the legendary Chris. I hope to get them posted tommorrow.

My musical rec for the day is Sumack. They remind me a bit of Geggy Tah, G-Love and Special Sauce, Citizen King, and BNL. It's a good listen when you are of a certain mindset. I dunno. Major kudos to the JaegerMeister for the spot on this one.

I have a book recommendation. Go buy the good-doctor Comfort's "The New Joy of Sex". It's a bit dated, a little hippyish, and oddly illustrated. It's a good read, though. Women, this book will probably make you laugh.

"We are miners... hard-rock miners. To shaft-house we must go. Hoya bottles on our shoulders. We are marching to the slopes. On the line boys. On the line, boys. Drill your holes and stand in line, till shift-boss comes to tell you, You must drill her out on time. Can you feel the rock-dust in your lungs? It will cut down a miner while he is still young. Two years and the silicosis takes hold... and I feel like I'm dying from mining for gold. Yes, I feel like I'm dying from mining for gold... "

As always, if this sparks you or you want to share something with me, please do so.
