Ok. I'm fudging this one. I missed the update today so this is coming to you from the future. The unknown territory of.... dum, dum, dum... october the fourth. I had the pleasure of talking to Mary (a very good friend of mine) last night. She got me thinking about the seemingly inverse correlation of technological advance and interpersonal contact again. *looks at the last sentence* Whew. Let's try that again... umm... That is to say: as we become more technologically advanced we are growing apart. This is something I think a lot about. In some ways I have trouble buying it. Look at e-mail, irc, cell-phones, etc. These are all things that should, theoretically be making it easier for us to come together. So many of the advances of the aptly named information-age directly aid communication. However, it really seems like somehow we are becoming increasingly distant. What's going on here? It seems like people talk to one another a lot now but actually physically getting together is becoming increasingly rare. Perhaps this is just among my friends. I'm trying to imagine what a world with no phones, e-mail, or faxes would be like. It's an interesting image. You would, once again, have to actually get out and go some place to be in touch with your friends. Talking to them would mean a lot more, in a way. Perhaps that's it. We are in a position where we are beginning to take personal communication for granted. I don't know. One thing I do know is that actually being with the people you love, be they family or friends, is an important part of life. There is something about that tangible presence that doesn't come across except in person. I think, if my friends are amenable, I'm going to institute a policy of getting together and doing some non-electronic something a couple of times a week... like playing games or just talking. I would really like your feedback on this one. Please mail me. Some stuff Music: Today's recommendation comes from the eighties... Be afraid. Go check out Wall of Voodoo. They are an interesting band... You've probably heard the infamous _Mexican Radio_ but, if that's all, you are missing out. Movies: Go rent High Fidelity. It has some Cusacks in it, it's funny, and it is well done. Da Plug: Go check out Seth's website: ethereal.morpheus.net. I sometimes wonder if he got my right-brain. Be sure and look at his art. Think about the incredible amount of data that is constantly wizzing around you. It's unbelievable. An entire unseen world. There is magic in this. Think about it. Those bits carry people's love, their money, their pictures. "Special favors come in thirty-one flavors, we're out of mints, pass the lifesavers. I'm droppin hints, candy for candy-coated tongue." As always, if this sparks you or you want to share something with me, please do so. |
