I'm finding rss feeds a strangely addictive way to streamline my daily browse. I realize that I'm about two years behind the curve on this. Ironically, one of the pieces of early code I wrote for Campus Connection was the RSS grabber. That was about two years ago. No idea why I didn't take it up as part of my personal info management habits.

As for readers, in linux I'm currently experimenting with straw. In windows I'm using SharpReader. Both work quite similarly and very well. I have one minor complaint about straw that I may submit a patch for (the feed description resizes the feed selector widget based on the text length). For users of ++crux linux: I have added straw to my ++ports (++httpup).

++joel has some comments on changes he'd like to see made to the web standards to make web application development easier and more robust.

I have some reservations about the current over-use of web applications, personally. The idea that all of the core pieces of the applications I run are going to reside elsewhere is one of the foremost... and I'm not a privacy zealot. What troubles me more is that I'm going to be, at last, truly dependent on having a permanent internet connection. My final poorly conceived protest is this: Why not develop something designed specifically for lightweight apps rather than overloading an already tortured protocol?

I have the strange feeling that I've talked about all this before.

I suppose one reason that people so like to use DHTML for application development is that it's more accessible. Personally I'm not so sure. I am a programmer, albeit a mediocre one at best, and I find javascript to be terribly frustrating. In truth, that's not necessarily due to flaws in the language itself (I'm certainly not qualified to make that judgement) but stems more from browser incompatibilities.

I don't know.

diet/exercise
i haven't been keeping track of what i eat in terms of calorie intake (since i'm not official on any kind of diet) but i've started making an earnest effort to simply cut down the amount of eating i do. so far i've been doing this for 2 days, so no real impression one way or the other yet. in addition to that, though, i'm starting to do about 15 minutes of exercise a day. and while this may sound pretty pathetic at first, consider that's 15 more than i usually get, aside from walking up and down stairs at work and the occasional rollerblading. i figure 15 minutes of exercise is enough to help me feel a bit better and not so much that i can't manage to find the time for it each day. we'll see how that goes, too.

really simple surfing
I feel like I'm about two years behind the RSS curve as well; my addiction only started this spring. I think it took this long for newsreaders to evolve into something normal users would use in their day-to-day browsing. I experiemented with a number of newsreaders, starting with Radio Userland back in 2000, but I didn't really see the point of RSS on the client side until I started using RSS Reader Panel for Mozilla Firefox. Other Windows RSS clients were too wonky with poor integration between it and other browsers/mail clients. Usually they were non-free applications with lousy non-compliant browsers.
