++slashdot linked the most remarkable case modification I think I've ever seen today. I almost feel bad about it. It's beautiful... and doomed. It would be impossible to updgrade much. I suppose that doesn't really matter, though. If nothing else you could keep it around as geek sculpture after it eventually dies.

The level of craftsmanship displayed in some of the case mods I've seen recently is very impressive. Something about doing that sort of fiddly and obsessive work appeals to me. I think it would be great fun to build something with my hands that I could really be proud of in the end. I don't think computer cases are the ticket for me but I'm sure I could figure out something that I would be interested in.

I made some more progress on _Eat, Drink, and be Healthy_ last night. In the main it seems to be a refactoring of the food pyramid. So far the main ideas seems to boil down to the following.

  • Get exercise. Getting fat comes from burning less calories than you ingest.
  • Moderate your portions. (see above)
  • Rather than avoiding fats, pick better fats.
  • Rather than avoiding carbs, pick better carbs.
  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.

All of that is fairly intuitive, if not always easy to implement. What's neat about the book is that there are detailed explanations for each of these suggestions. It seems to be based on solid research. It's definitely a nice change but from most of the nutrition/diet books I've seen.

...

Amusingly, despite the fact that I work in computers I apparently can't build reliable machines. My computer has some kind of a hardware problem, most likely the graphics card or motherboard. Some component of ++karatop 's computer has released it's magic purple smoke (again, probably the video card). Some days I hate computers.
