Welp, it's over. The last of my student loans went the way of the dodo today... to the tune of not quite nine hundred dollars. Now, the only outstanding debt that I have left is my car loan. You would not believe what a relief this is to me. I hate being indebted to anyone or anything. My student loan was the worst. The monthly payment was so small that I would frequently forget about it and it was going to take forever to pay down. Ugh. Good riddance.

I suppose I should explain why I am flushing my debts. I'm hoping to buy a house. You heard correctly. I did the math: a 15 year mortgage on a $75000 house @ 8% works out to a monthly payment of right around $650 and, in the end, I'll own something. Now, weigh that against my current monthly rent of $750 with no hope of any tangible ownership. Hrmm...

Of course there is another side to this: I'll own a house. That's kind of a scary prospect. In my mind it implies a lot of commitment. Commitment to contuing to live in Tulsa, commitment to nominally being a responsible adult, and commitment to a lifestyle. I suppose when I really look at that list only the second item is real, the others are mental artifacts. It's a pain but I can always sell any house I buy and maybe even come out a little bit ahead (hey, it's possible). How would my lifestyle really change? I think too much.

I've started reading Aldous Huxley's _Doors of Perception_. Ugh. I should do my homework first. I really feel that having read one intellectual's account of her/his personal experience with hallucinogens is wholly adequate. I read Albert Hoffman's paper on his experiences with the discovery and lab testing of LSD and considered myself done. Can any of you tell me whether there is any merit in coninuing to read Huxley's version of this story? Huxley is a formidable writer, that much I will say, but drugs are boring frankly.

How's that for irony? Parents, if you are struggling with trying to educate your kids about drugs why not integrate that little tidbit? Drugs are boring.

...

I've been doing a lot of reading about the brain on the web. There are an unbelievable amount of interesting tidbits of information available on the topic. I've read about neurons, vision, memory, etc. The explanations of the functioning of neurons have been of particular interest. What amazing little structures. I am left with a number of nagging questions, though. The most pressing of these is what determines which neurons are interconnected? Is it genetic, or based on proximity, or is it something far more esoteric? This is really confounding me.

It looks like I'm going to be a student again. Woot! As of earlier this week I am enrolled in two courses. I am very pleased to announce that neither of them are in the field of computer science. Good riddance.

In movie news: It looks like Pioneer is just about set to release the DVD of _Akira_. It will apparently coincide with the theatrical rerelease. It's about time. If you haven't seen this movie... no, scratch that... just go see this movie. Then go buy it. Thank you Pioneer! They've dumped quite a bit of money in to restoring and remastering it. Kaneeeeedddddaaaaa!

I have a request. Would all of you be so kind as to leave me a list of your favorite albums? It doesn't have to be any particular number (ie. top 5) or genre. Just a list. I will listen to ALL of them. I need to break into some new tunes.

I remember that the first time drugs sounded remotely appealing was in the third grade. There was some story in Weekly Reader about what illegal drugs do to you, with a cutesy chart. It said that LSD causes you to see colors and patterns of light, and Libbi raises her hand all, "Mrs. Raper, LSD kinda sounds like a movie!" I thought to myself, "hmm, that would be kinda cool."

My top five albums today:
Safe As Milk by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (It has Ry Cooder on guitar!)
Beachwood Sparks by Beachwood Sparks
Faust and Faust So Far by Faust (Two classic albums on one CD!)
Viva Last Blues by Palace
Eureka by Jim O'Rourke

And you said it wasn't a real post!

Contrary to what you said in your office today, I believe todays post is more of a post than you think.

There are a few upsides to owning a house (which i'm sure you already know). The tax break is great, and you don't have to haggle the landlord to get things fixed anymore (even though now it's up to you and out of your pocket). Also, with a rent house you never know when all of the sudden the owner might need/want it back and kick you out... I've seen this happen to several people. It's just nice to have a place to call your own that is truely yours (once it's paid off).

Drugs are boring Mmmm Kay? Just stop reading the book if it's dull. There's no good reason to force yourself to read something that doesn't really interest you. This isn't school work ya know. ;)

Akira is being released in theaters before it hits DVD? When when when? I bet we won't see it here unless the AMC gets it. If not I guess we'll just have to wait until the August release of the DVD.

Top 5 Most Listend to CDs: (that you may not already rotate)

  • Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
  • American Thighs - Veruca Salt
  • Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughn
  • dysfunction - Staind
  • Things Falling Apart - Nine Inch Nails
My most recent buy and went through pretty heavy rotation until a couple of weeks ago is Things Falling Apart. It's remixes of the Fragile sessions and in many cases these tracks are better than the originals. Outside of that I picked cds I've listened to quite a bit that I don't know if you've ever checked out.

Hmm...it's hard to pick my favorites, but here's some stuff that I always like when I listen to it.

Soundtrack to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Barenaked Ladies - Stunt (Maroon is also good)
Sixpence None the Richer
Itzhak Perlman - Live in the Fiddler's House

I'm currently listening to Lifehouse - No Name Face and throughly enjoying it, though I don't know if it'll really make most favorite list :)
