It's almost spring again... and all I have to say is it's about damned time. I love winter... for about three weeks. That's usually sufficient. I mean hey, we even had snow this year. Most years we just pretend Oklahoma has real winters. It's just about over, though. Today the weather has turned beautiful, the University's randomly slaughtering trees to make room for more environmentally sound things like parking lots, and birds are singing. Sounds like spring to me. This makes me happy.

Things in the world at large are a little fucked-up. Par for the course, I suppose. I've heard a lot of interesting things in passing about top-secret nuclear target lists and the like. The Israelis and Palestinians are demonstrating their love for one another on a grander scale than usual. The first-world is waging a war on the rest of the world in the name of fighting terrorism. It's a sloppy scene.

The thing that really strikes me lately is the size of the gap between Joe Average and the political system that governs him. It seems like our government carries on and plays their little games largely without us. We fund the system, of course, but the extent of our interface with it is almost entirely limited to the police, taxation, and elections. It reminds me most of professional athletics. It's a spectator situation. I suppose that this is the way things have always been. It just never ocurred to me to think of it in those terms.

I do, however, find the politics-cum-pro-football view to be sort of a relief. At least until I start thinking about the parts of the world that see the uglier side of the sport. I would hate to be in foreign policy right now. The very thought makes me shudder.

The geekhaus is changing it up a little here in the very near future. Bobby has taken a job with Travelocity and is moving to Dallas. I have to say I'm a little bummed. Bobby's been a real pleasure to live with. His deadpan humor is unmatched. At any rate, good luck, Bobby!

At the moment I'm not really even looking for another roommate. I hope to buy a house in the near future.... then I'll decide what to do next. Renting sucks.

...

The whole house-buying thing is tripping me out. I have this strange perception of it as a monumental process. I suppose I'll start by asking someone at my bank if it's even something I can practically consider doing and proceed from there.

My basic criteria for selecting a house are simple. It must be someplace reasonably safe. There must be some hope of selling it in a reasonable time frame without taking too heinous a loss at some point down the road. It must be reasonably structurally sound. It must not suck. That's about it. We shall see.

Stuff Jared Sorta Recommends

Clark turned me on to a great cooking magazine. Cooks' Illustrated. It seems to be a good compromise between practical and frufru. Definitely a nicely put together mag, though. If you have any interest in cooking it's worth a look. Their website is ok. I'll post a link to it in the links section.

Kara and I hooked up with some friends this last weekend. (Hi Cathy, Ethan!) We played a card game called the Great Dalmudi or something like that. Fun game. Nice and simple. I've been given to understand that it's no longer in print but it might be well worth tracking down on fleabay if you enjoy having something to do while you sit around and drink mediocre coffee.

Mom gave me a nice knife for christmas. It's a Henckels santoku. Scary sharp. If you're used to cooking with crappy knives ditch them and get something like this. You'll thank me... maybe... *shrug* Just be careful, ok?

Logos

Dude, like I posted about No Logo (the book) almost a year ago. But, yeah, I understand. Like I'm just now getting interested/addicted to photo.net after you linked to Greenspun some time ago.

Yeah, its hard to know how to react to all of the global instability right now, cause nobody seems too interested in resolving issues and getting things done. If you want to see some slightly more amusing/benign politics-as-spectator- sport you can follow Phila delphia city hall politics. I'm convinced most of the actions taken by our esteemed city councilmen - taking lie detector tests after accusations of uttering ethnic slurs, etc - are done for the entertainment of voters, rather than the good of the city. I can't pay attention anymore, tho. It makes me sick.

Oops

Damn, man. It's hard to keep up with you. Somehow, despite your recommendations, I always seem to come around to this stuff on my own a year or years later. It's not that I ignore you... somehow it just takes me time to get there.

Honestly, I've found that I can't really watch or participate in politics of any sort these days. It's too alarming. If I were a shallower person I think I would just be greatful that I live on right side of our accountability- free government.

Thanks, btw... I've been really enjoying the CDs you sent me. Is there any method to the other items you send? I enjoy them in their own right but I'd like to think I'm not missing a message.

Whatever

I'm not hurt or anything, I just thought I would give myself some props. I'm glad you dig the CD's - I thought you would enjoy Tortoise in that artsy-fartsy K&D vein. I'd been meaning to send that German stuff since September. I thought of you the first time I heard it.

I'm trying to remember the other stuff I mailed you - a painted page out of the NYTimes Magazine with a volcano and the words "dude"? I was real under-the-influence (or should it be over?) and I thought it would be funny to mail that unannounced. Probably some other random slides and photos PR people mail me and a train pass. No rhyme or reason, just a physical documentary of that day.

My big news is that I enrolled in a photo technique class yesterday. I've always wanted to learn how to do darkroom stuff, and talking to this gal at the Print Center in Philly enticed me even more. I like doing creative things with complex machines, but I need to get away from the computer, so I had Dad mail me his old camera stuff, and I'm gonna be manually exposin' 'til the cows come home.

Oh yeah, I haven't heard back from any other schools, but I got into the Human-Computer Interaction grad program at University of Michigan. I'm stoked. Maybe I already told you that.
