Anne and I were discussing Ewoks and Gelflings today and I just had to share the following Anne quote: "Well, at least i can say I didn't like them just because they were cute. I liked the fact that they are all family and loyal .... and being pursued by big ugly things always helps when you want to root for someone."

We're talkin' anchors, talkin' ships, we're talkin' seas, we're talkin' everything you need... You should be workin' now. Not only askin' how and the whereabouts of where you'll be. I don't suspect you will be thinking when the brain is dead and the mind has taken over, this is a skill, this is not a game. Where have you been? Are you with us? Can you hear us? Got the megaphone pointed at you...

Portals
I just had a weird conversation and I thought I'd have to share it with the HeadSpace. This PR Flack calls me and asks,
Flack:Hi m4dd4wg, I'm doing a press survey on Enterprise Information Portals, EIP, and I wondered if you could answer five questions for me?
m4dd4wg:OK, but make it quick...
Flack: Thanks, m4dd4wg, first, what is your definition of a portal?
m4dd4wg: Hmmm, I guess a portal is an e-business infrastructure that performs real time content aggregation.
Flack:Hmmm... And what EIP vendors are you familiar with?
m4dd4wg: Ummm Microsoft and Lotus are the only ones I know about, but portals aren't usually something that fall in my lap.
Flack: That's OK, and who do you see as the leaders in the portal space?
m4dd4wg: Like I said, I'm not super familiar with this market, but I'd have to say Lotus has a pretty nice product.
Flack: Thanks, and what do you think the purpose of EIP is?
m4dd4wg: I think portals allow a company to tell their stockholders that they have a portal initiative, and its going to revolutionize the way they do business, you know, its for the stockholders.
Flack: errrrrmm..
m4dd4wg: I guess they allow for the quick dissemination of corporate information assets throughout the enterprise.
Flack: Thanks! And where do you see the future of portals? m4dd4wg: I think in 18 months they're going to be the big joke, you know (in a hillbilly accent)"remember back in 2000, when we all had to have a portal? Har Har Har!
Flack: Um yeah, well, thanks for your time!

Ok. That takes it. Mind if I cut'n'paste that to my boss? I wonder if he'll think it's as dead on as I do. :)

Portal Love
Totally, you can forward that to your boss. Actually, Lotus' Knowledge Discovery Server is kinda cool, if not frightening. It basically scans Office Documents, mailboxes, HTML files, and the like through an organization and indexes them. Lotus' other piece, K-Station, takes the hierarchy and creates an intranet portal. Basically, you're put in the position where anything on an end user machine becomes part of the intranet.
