Where did the American monomania about success come from? Sometimes it really boggles the mind. If you are in a situation that makes you happy and your basic needs are provided for what more is there to want? Why is it that Americans are seemingly so obsessed with amassing wealth, having more stuff, and better careers?
I spent some time thinking about what I really consider necessary to my happiness. They were suprisingly few and relatively simple. I need the same basics as everyone else, that is: food and shelter. Beyond that give me some source of music, something to read, and friends, and I'm all set. Really. That's it... well... maybe something to write on.
How about you? What do you need in your life? What's optional? Are you obsessed with bigger and better?

I read some snippets of Plato's _Republic_ in the theory and criticism book last night. I am a bit befuddled. Why bother to write yes-men to nod and smile at everything your main character says? I see now why most of the non-ishmael characters in Daniel Quinn's Ishmael books are so incredibly stupid (if noble).
